As an ex cardiac care nurse I understand just how life changing a heart problem can be. Whether it is a heart attack, angina, an arrhythmia, or other form of heart disease the process from event to diagnosis, to treatment, possible surgery and recovery can be very daunting.
For some people the event is enough for them to drop the unhealthy habits, reevaluate their lives and move confidently into the future with a new lease on life fully embracing their second chance.
For others the stress and anxieties increase, uncertainty sets in and fears arise around what the future will hold. Questions such as can I trust my heart? Can I exercise? If so, how much? Will it happen again? What should I eat? Am I suddenly going to drop dead? Bubble up constantly in people’s minds leaving them feeling vulnerable, lost and confused. Worse still, people know that they need to let go of unhealthy habits, but these habits are deeply ingrained to their identity and have been their stress relief mechanisms for many years, perhaps a lifetime. They are also hyper aware that stress is a major contributor to cardiac problems and a heart problem is very stressful. All this leaves many people in a situation where they need to find new ways to manage the stress that contributes to further heart problems whilst letting go of the unhealthy habits that also contribute to heart problems which in itself is even more stressful…. In short, the whole situation is as serious as a heart attack!
Although there is a lot of support available in the form of cardiac rehab and services looking after the physical / medical side of the heart and recovery there is very little available to help people overcome the emotional trauma caused by a heart attack or other cardiac condition. The heart is associated with the emotions in all cultures around the world. The heart is indeed what makes us human, the centre of all things yet in the medical world this is never addressed. We have become very good at treating the mechanics of the heart but have long neglected the emotional component to proper heart health and recovery.
As a former cardiac care nurse and professional remote area medic I have a deep understanding of cardiac conditions, investigations, medications, side effects, treatments and surgeries giving me an insight into the challenges that many people face when dealing with a heart condition. As a qualified hypnotherapist I have an equally deep understanding of the detrimental effects of unresolved emotional trauma, the devastating effects of stress on the mind and body (especially the heart) and the way that habits are formed and broken. With a foot in both camps, I am uniquely positioned to bridge the gap between the medical and psychological worlds offering a truly unique service to help people heal in both mind and body, literally strengthening the connection between the heart and the brain. The 3B: Breath, Behaviour, Belief approach can help with all emotional, behavioural, stress related and other formerly neglected areas of cardiac rehabilitation.
My aim is to help people deal with the identity shifts required, manage stress in new healthy ways, let go of old unhealthy habits, deal with traumas or PTSD associated with the current condition or past traumas that may have contributed to the condition in the first place. I can help people deal with the emotional trauma of having been received CPR and having been successfully resuscitated and I can help people prepare for or recover from surgery by aligning their mind with health and recovery rather than illness and worry.
It is my desire to help heart attack survivors and people with other conditions heal emotionally and trust their heart again, empowering them to move confidently into the future. The mind, body and emotions are not separate entities and should not be treated as such. To achieve true and lasting health all areas should be addressed. I aim to do this with the 3B method.

Whether you have a formal medical diagnosis or not I understand just how debilitating health anxiety can be.
Constant fear that something is wrong, worried that the Dr’s have missed something, what if it is real this time? Googling symptoms to the point that you are convinced it is a terminal condition, worried that the shortness of breath and chest pains are a life threatening heart condition (it truly is a cruel twist of fate that anxiety symptoms mimic life threatening heart conditions isn’t it?), worried that you will suddenly stop breathing, worried that it is cancer, constant fear of death, worried that you will worry yourself into actually being ill or worse still, death.

Having worked in Thoracic and Cardiac Surgery units as a young nurse I know just how nerve racking the thought of surgery can be.
Even when I trained as a nurse way back in 2001 it was well known that pre op anxiety was related to post op pain and complications. The reason being that stress hormones related to anxiety and a fight or flight state can suppress the immune systems function making it harder for your body to heal and fight infection, the 2 things you absolutely need post operatively. Also, anxiety leads to muscular tension which increases pain and discomfort.
Therefore, the calmer and more relaxed you are before and after the operation the less complications you are likely to experience and the more resilient and able your body and mind will be to dealing with any that do arise.
Once I learned this, I made it a priority to put my patients at ease and relieve their fears the best I could before they went to theatre, and I became pretty good at it… even before developing the 3B approach!

Tomophobia is the fear of surgical procedures or medical interventions.
This debilitating phobia can include the fear of surgery, dental work, blood tests, needles, doctors, hospitals, investigations or any medical procedure.
This can be dangerous as it can lead an individual to avoid medical care when it is required and delay essential treatments. Easy to fix small procedures can be avoided and turn into bigger problems that require bigger interventions with negative consequences.
If and when medical intervention is sought it is often such a terrifying experience that the anxiety increases and the phobia is reinforced making it a terrible experience from start to finish.

If you suffer with chronic pain of any sort and have been medically checked and diagnosed, I can teach you some extremely effective techniques that very often make a huge difference. It is important to note that pain is the body’s way of warning you something is wrong and needs attention, therefore, before any kind of pain relief treatment, I would of course require that you have first been to your GP or suitable medical specialist to address the underlying cause and get a diagnosis, though I don’t require any kind of specific referral.
Also, if you are due to undergo a medical procedure in the future (surgery or dental) and you are concerned about pain I can teach you some techniques to help you prepare mentally and physically prior to the event, or even during the event if possible, to help you be as comfortable as possible during and after the procedure.
Research has shown that increased anxiety prior to surgery is linked to higher levels of pain and complications post operatively. The more relaxed and comfortable you feel beforehand the more comfortable your recovery is likely to be. We can work together to give you the skills to maintain a relaxed state that is optimal for your health.
Hypnosis and breathwork have been used to control pain for centuries and people have even undergone surgery whilst in a hypnotic trance. In fact, it was fast becoming the primary form of anaesthesia prior to the development of safe drugs to do the job in the 18 and 1900’s.
The mind is such a powerful tool that we can use its abilities to reduce or in some cases eliminate your pain completely. Pain is generated in the brain as a result of nerve impulses; we can work together using special hypnotic techniques to change how the brain processes these impulses to make you feel a lot more comfortable and relaxed.
Your breath is also a direct way to influence your nervous system bringing you further control over your state and level of relaxation.
It usually takes one or two sessions to go through this and teach you the necessary skills to feel more comfortable or prepare for a procedure, but sometimes, where appropriate, we can also investigate any unconscious psychological reasons for the pain, too. We will also teach you some meditative self hypnosis, relaxation and breathwork techniques to further empower you going forwards with your condition.

For the symptomatic relief of tinnitus hypnotherapy, meditation and mindfulness training can often be extremely effective.
Using techniques from within the 3B framework, you may be able to discover surprisingly effective ways of reducing, controlling or even eliminating your awareness of your Tinnitus symptoms.
Once learned, these techniques are fairly easy to apply and can be put to use in almost any situation, even those ‘quiet’ moments when your symptoms are often at their worse.
The aim being that the overall level of your Tinnitus appears to decrease and turn down, so that it no longer seems to be so intrusive. In some cases you may even be able to ‘turn it off’ for periods.
There is no ‘magic’ involved in the methods I use and this is not necessarily a ‘cure’ in medical terms. Using the 3B approach, mindfulness, meditation, breathwork and hypnotherapy can primarily help you reduce your awareness of the Tinnitus – like not noticing the humming of your computer – until of course you draw your attention to it.
Different approaches, however, can use the calming and relaxing effects of meditation and hypnosis itself to help you reduce stress which is known to be one of the primary aggravators of Tinnitus symptoms – as well as resolve any underlying emotional issues which are often contributing factors.
The 3B principles and techniques are applicable to all Tinnitus sufferers, though the results achieved will vary from person to person.
Most of the symptomatic-relief techniques do involve an element of mindfulness, meditation and self hypnosis, which you will be able to learn during the sessions, and anyone who wants to experience self-hypnosis, can – so there is no need to worry about not being able to be apply the techniques.

Learning to meditate and cultivating a regular practice has only benefited my life and the lives of countless others, and it can benefit you too. I have studied with gurus and monks and attended retreats in India, Korea, Nepal, New Zealand and the UK. I practice the art daily and have been a regular practitioner for most of my adult life. There are many different forms of meditation and different ways to achieve the meditative state but once you know the principles all become available to you. All that matters then is finding the style that you enjoy the most, and committing to the practice, to bring about the subtle yet profound benefits.
We wash our bodies and clean our teeth daily, so why not take the time to cleanse and declutter your mind to bring about clarity, focus and a sense of calmness to face the days challenges? Meditation really is a practical mental health hygiene tool that is always available and applicable.
This is by far one of the best self help skills you can learn and apply. Meditation is not a quick fix, but more a long term maintenance tool for healthy living and mental health hygiene when practiced regularly for as little as 10 – 20 minutes a day. Some stress is useful and even necessary in life it motivates us to do the things we need to do and helps us survive. The primitive fight or flight stress response is hardwired to our neurology and is essential to help us avoid danger.

Clinical hypnosis is the hypnotherapy most people think of when hypnosis is mentioned. Hypnotic suggestion is the type of hypnosis used in the stage shows we have all seen for entertainment but has many therapeutic applications as well.
After an initial chat to find out what you do and don’t want, you will be relaxed into a calm and peaceful trance state of mind and given suggestions to help change your thoughts, feelings and behaviours.
You will be aware throughout the whole process, but in a comfortable hypnotic trance. You will be able to accept the suggestions that you do want and will naturally reject anything that you do not want. You will be in complete control the whole time.
Hypnotic Suggestion is ideal for breaking habits such as Smoking, over-eating, choosing the wrong foods, or preparing for a specific medical procedure.
It can also be used for pain control, childbirth, IBS, boosting your immune system and a range of other medical applications, though it is in no way a substitution for proper medical care or diagnosis.
Hypnotic suggestion is also great for general relaxation and you will be taught methods to use the skills on your own to manage stress or pain if it would be of benefit to you.
Hypnotic Suggestion can be permanent, but it depends on the nature of the issue. If the suggestions ‘stick’ enough to permanently change your inner belief(s), then the results will be long-lasting.
However, if it is used as a short-term fix to help you get through a specific situation, such as a specific medical procedure then the results may be short-term as well, lasting perhaps a few weeks or so, depending on the individual circumstances.
Hypnoanalysis is used for deeper, more emotional issues and helps you understand and edit the beliefs that are driving your behaviours and feelings.
Hypnoanalysis is probably one of the kindest, quickest and most effective forms of therapy available in the world today for the resolution of personal emotional and psychological problems such as Anxiety, Depression, Fears, Phobias, Eating Disorders, Relationship Issues, Sexual Problems, Lack of Confidence, Body Dysmorphia, Overcoming Trauma, PTSD, or anything where your thoughts and feelings are creating emotions that impact on your behaviour or experience.
Hypno-analysis helps to resolve the real root of the issue and underlying cause of the problem by combining methods drawn from a wide range of psychotherapeutic approaches – and often leads to permanent beneficial changes.
Hypno-analysis will essentially give you a complete “emotional clear-out” – setting you free of old ideas and old feelings that may have been holding you back or causing you problems for years. It will help you understand and update your belief system at a core level and bring about profound and lasting change.
Most people going through hypnoanalysis realise that not only does their issue get resolved but there is a positive ripple effect in other areas of their life as well.
You are still YOU at the end but usually a much happier, relaxed and more confident version of you.
This is a very powerful tool to promote your health and wellbeing.
Neuro Linguistic Programing uses advanced communication techniques to help you understand how you think and make any changes you feel would be beneficial to your thought processes.
NLP offers some fantastic tools and methods for you to draw upon which are very effective when combined with clinical hypnosis and hypnoanalysis but can also be done very consciously without any formal hypnosis at all.
It is a method of influencing brain behaviour (the “neuro” part of the phrase) through the use of language (the “linguistic” part) and other types of communication to enable a person to “recode” the way the brain responds to stimuli (that’s the “programming”) and bring about new and improved behaviours and beliefs.
It is basically the use of language to influence how we think and respond to situations. It is extremely effective to assist in learning new skills, improve a current skill, modify an existing behaviour or model a desired behaviour. It offers some great techniques for overcoming phobias, changing habits, improving confidence, reducing anxiety, assisting with pain control and is very useful for accessing the right state at the right time for performance related issues.
It aims to make the unconscious thinking we do conscious and allows you to reprogram your own mind to work in a more beneficial and helpful way. It is often said that the mind is a fantastic servant but a terrible master. NLP enables you to take control of your own thinking and use the mind as a tool to get the thoughts, feelings and behaviours that you want in life. Once your internal state is where you want it to be, the external results tend to look after themselves.
All of these modalities are extremely effective in their own right, but when used together in conjunction with the rest of the 3B’s it can lead to fast and profound breakthroughs to improve your health and wellbeing.
